History of The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre
The Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB) has a remarkable history that began in Chicago, where the founders – Matt Besser, Amy Poehler, Ian Roberts, and Matt Walsh – trained under Del Close at ImprovOlympic. They gained popularity with their signature show, ASSSSCAT, and later moved to New York City in 1996, intending to secure their own TV show. Instead, they revolutionized the comedy scene by teaching improv classes and hosting electrifying live shows, establishing the UCB Theatre on West 22nd Street as the epicenter of a vibrant comedy movement.
As their fame grew, the UCB Theatre moved to a bigger space in 2003, becoming UCB Chelsea. The success in New York led to the opening of UCB Theatre LA in Hollywood in 2005, with Comedy Bang! Bang! among its regular shows. Despite facing challenges and closures in New York, UCB LA continued to thrive. In 2022, the theater entered a new chapter under new ownership, giving hope for its future. In September 2022, UCB LA triumphantly reopened, showcasing its enduring legacy as a nurturing home for comedy and a place that celebrates the brilliance of comedians, both seasoned and aspiring.
Through its journey from Chicago to New York and finally to Los Angeles, the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre has become a significant force in the comedy world, embodying laughter, creativity, and a community of comedic talent.
